XLS is a file format used by Microsoft Excel for storing spreadsheet data. It is based on the Binary Interchange File Format (BIFF) and stores information in binary format. XLS files can be created by Microsoft Excel and other similar spreadsheet programs.
Introduced in 1987 as part of Excel for Windows, XLS was the default file format for Excel until the release of Excel 2007, when it was replaced by the newer XLSX format. XLS files store data in tables of rows and columns and support formatted text, images, charts, and more.
The main difference between XLS and XLSX files is that XLSX files are XML-based and have a more open structure. This makes them compatible with a wider range of platforms and allows for smaller file sizes, better recovery of information from damaged files, and easier detection of files containing macros.
