Multiple-image Network Graphics (.mng)

The MNG (Multiple-image Network Graphics) format is an advanced file type for animated graphics. It surpasses the well-known GIF format by offering superior compression and full alpha transparency, enhancing the quality of transitions and animations. Originating from the PNG (Portable Network Graphics) standard, MNG addresses the animation capabilities absent in PNG. The same team behind PNG, the PNG Development Group, introduced MNG to provide a more efficient method for handling animated graphics.

Despite its technical advantages, MNG has not achieved the same level of popularity as GIFs. Its limited use can be attributed to the longstanding dominance of GIFs and the rise of other formats like APNG and WebM, which fulfill similar functions. Nonetheless, various software tools continue to support MNG, enabling users to view, modify, and create MNG files, even though it remains a less prevalent choice among animation file formats.
