Introduced in 2015, FLIF uses MANIAC (Meta-Adaptive Near-zero Integer Arithmetic Coding) for efficient compression, making it suitable for various image types without quality loss. Despite its advantages, FLIF development ceased as it was superseded by JPEG XL.

It extends the Portable Any Map (PNM) format, supporting 2-dimensional image data storage in a binary format with an ASCII header. This format's history traces back to the need for a more adaptable and comprehensive bitmap solution within the PNM family.
